Common PAT Testing Questions

Clear answers for landlords, businesses and organisations arranging Portable Appliance Testing.

What is PAT testing?

PAT Testing, or Portable Appliance Testing, is the inspection and testing of electrical equipment to help confirm it is safe for continued use.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

There is no single rule that says every electrical item must be PAT tested on a fixed schedule. However, businesses and landlords have duties to keep electrical equipment safe. PAT testing is a recognised way to help check equipment condition and keep clear maintenance records.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

The recommended interval depends on the equipment type, environment and level of use. Reports can include recommended retest intervals.

What types of equipment need testing?

Common items include computers, monitors, chargers, kettles, extension leads, printers, power tools, cleaning equipment and kitchen appliances.

Do you provide a certificate/report?

Yes. Digital asset records and a PDF report are provided, along with pass/fail labels on tested items.

What happens if an item fails?

Failed items are labelled and listed in the failed item summary. Failed items should not be used again until repaired, replaced or retested.

Do you test landlord appliances?

Yes. The service is suitable for rental properties, HMOs and landlord-supplied appliances.

Do you work outside normal business hours?

Evening or weekend work may be available by arrangement and may incur an additional charge.

How long does PAT testing take?

Time on site depends on the number of items, access and whether equipment can be unplugged when required.

Do items need to be unplugged?

Some testing requires items to be unplugged briefly. Please note any equipment that cannot be unplugged during business hours when requesting a quote.

Do you cover all of Oxfordshire?

The service focuses on Oxfordshire and surrounding areas. Other nearby locations may be available on request.

How do I request a quote?

Use the quotation form and include site details, premises type, approximate item count, access notes and preferred timeframe.
